Job Summary

The States of Guernsey are looking for a Social Worker to join the Children’s Safeguarding Team.

The post holder will assist in the provision and development of an effective service for children and families within the Bailiwick by working closely with other agencies, professionals, and members of the public.

Social Workers employed by the States of Guernsey will undertake specialist functions across the Bailiwick, including child protection investigations, working with children in need, children in need of protection, children in care, and children subject to Care Requirements in accordance with the Children (Guernsey and Alderney) Law 2008.

Main Duties of the Job

To assist in the provision and development of an effective service for children and families within the Bailiwick by working closely with other agencies, professionals, and members of the public.

Social Workers employed by the States of Guernsey will undertake specialist functions including:

  • Child protection investigations
  • Working with children in need
  • Working with children in need of protection
  • Working with children in care
  • Working with children subject to Care Requirements under the Children (Guernsey and Alderney) Law 2008

Job Responsibilities

Case Management and Decision Making

  • Make day-to-day decisions within the parameters of the Team Manager/Deputy Team Manager
  • Manage caseloads including child in need, child protection, childcare proceedings, and care requirement cases
  • Investigate alleged neglect, ill treatment, or abuse and assess service needs
  • Initiate Child Protection Procedures or legal applications as required
  • Supervise children subject to Child Protection Plans
  • Undertake assessments of Children in Care to meet statutory duties

Reporting and Legal Work

  • Prepare reports, statements, and legal documents for courts and tribunals
  • Attend court and CYCT hearings representing the Committee
  • Ensure all work aligns with Health and Social Care policies, procedures, and legislation

Safeguarding and Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records using electronic systems
  • Work in partnership with parents, colleagues, and external agencies
  • Ensure the child remains central to all decision-making
  • Provide consultation on safeguarding and social care matters

Professional Practice and Development

  • Engage in supervision and appraisal to reflect on professional performance
  • Participate in duty back-up and emergency rota systems
  • Undertake additional duties as required by the Head of Service

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognised Social Care qualification (Diploma/Degree in Social Work or CQSW)
  • Registered with Social Work England
